NIGHTS OF GREAT MUSIC
BY BUDDY SAMPSON
In the Level One, 6311 Wilshire Boulevard, in Los Angeles,
Singer/Guitarist Gerald Miller had a dynamic set that consisted
of good music and fun. The left-handed guitarist started his
set with a Marvin Gaye song, "What's Going On," which
was a nice rendition of the classic song. The smooth-styled
singer and guitarist riffs with ease with a style clearly his
own. On "What's
Going On," Keyboardist
Charles Love and bassist Bass Jones showed their mettle, with
drummer Derrick Womack solidly holding down the back beat.
The second song, "Illusions," was a funky song that featured
a superb vocal and a tasty guitar solo. What makes Miller
special, however, is his showmanship. On this song, he sauntered
in the audience bringing his music closer to his listeners.
His third song, an Al Jarreau composition, "After All," was
a beautiful song, which he sang with feeling and beauty. his
forth tune was Bobby Caldwell's, "What You Won't Do For
Love. " I
especially liked what bassist Jones added to the song. He gave
the song a funky feel not done by the many artists and musicians
that have covered this popular song. Miller demonstrated his
considerable scatting ability an that song. As the set went
on, his playing got more and more fluid. His solo ended with
appreciative applause from the audience. Jones did a great,
extended solo, followed by drummer Womack.
His record, Personal Passions, is on his label, Mahkingdom
Records. You can get a copy of it off his website, www.geraldmillermusic.com.
He will also be performing at Lunaria, August 1. The restaurant
